Energy Star – Choose A Light Guide

energy_starThe ENERGY STAR Choose A Light Guide

Usage Tips

To have the best experience possible, keep the following tips in mind:

Hold the base and not the ‘glass’ to screw in the bulb.
Read the packaging to see where each bulb should be used. Not all ENERGY STAR certified bulbs are designed to work in every socket. Most photocells and timers are not designed to work with LEDs. Check with your photocell or timer manufacturer for compatibility.

Every time you are using an ENERGY STAR certified product you are saving energy, money, and greenhouse gas emissions.

ENERGY STAR is a joint program of the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency helping us all save money and protect the environment through energy efficient products and practices.

Light Temperature Tips: Choose Your Mood

While most LED light bulbs come in “warm” colors to match the yellowish light of incandescent bulbs, you can also choose “cooler” colors with whiter and bluish hues for reading and task lighting. Color in lighting is measured on the Kelvin scale (K) and is marked on the bulb packaging. For warmer color look for 2700K, 4000K gives a bright white light and 6000–6500K is bluer and most like daylight.

Bulb-Specific Tips: How to Choose

A-shaped bulbs combine the efficiency of the spiral bulbs, with the look and feel of the traditional incandescents. These products are great for consumers who don’t A-Line_200x200like the look of the spiral bulbs but still want efficient lighting. You can use A-shaped bulbs wherever you used to use traditional incandescent bulbs, such as clip-on lamp shades. Check the packaging for compatibility with dimmers and three-way fixtures.

Globe_200x200Globe

Globe-shaped bulbs are ideal for use where you can see the bulbs, like bathroom vanity bars and ceiling pendants. A globe bulb is basically a spiral bulb with a decorative cover.

Linear_200x200Tubed Bulbs

Basically straight versions of the the old CFL spiral bulbs, tubed bulbs work well in lamps that have slender covers such as wall sconces.

Candle_200x200Candle Bulbs

These products are ideal for use in decorative fixtures where you can see the light bulb. The sleek shape also allows you to use them in tight fitting light fixtures where a covered globe won’t fit.

Flood_200x200Indoor Reflector Bulbs

Reflector bulbs are perfect for providing directional light — think of recessed ceiling lights in kitchens or ceiling fans. Indoor reflector bulbs are much smaller then those that are designed for outdoor use. Some indoor reflector bulbs can be used with a dimmer — the packaging will tell you.

Benefits of LED Light Bulbs

Long-lasting – LED bulbs last up to 10 times as long as compact fluorescents, and far longer than typical incandescents.

Durable – since LEDs do not have a filament, they are not damaged under circumstances when a regular incandescent bulb would be broken. Because they are solid, LED bulbs hold up well to jarring and bumping.

Cool – these bulbs do not cause heat build-up; LEDs produce 3.4 btus/hour, compared to 85 for incandescent bulbs. Common incandescent bulbs get hot and contribute to heat build-up in a room. LEDs prevent this heat build-up, thereby helping to reduce air conditioning costs in the home.

Mercury-free – no mercury is used in the manufacturing of LEDs.

More efficient – LED light bulbs use only 2-17 watts of electricity (1/3rd to 1/30th of Incandescent or CFL). LED bulbs used in fixtures inside the home save electricity, remain cool and save money on replacement costs since LED bulbs last so long. Small LED flashlight bulbs will extend battery life 10 to 15 times longer than with incandescent bulbs.

Cost-effective – although LEDs are initially expensive, the cost is recouped over time and in battery savings. LED bulb use was first adopted commercially, where maintenance and replacement costs are expensive. But the cost of new LED bulbs has gone down considerably in the last few years. and are continuing to go down. Today, there are many new LED light bulbs for use in the home, and the cost is becoming less of an issue. To see a cost comparison between the different types of energy-saving light bulbs, see our Light Bulb Comparison Charts.

Light for remote areas and portable generators – because of the low power requirement for LEDs, using solar panels becomes more practical and less expensive than running an electric line or using a generator for lighting in remote or off-grid areas. LED light bulbs are also ideal for use with small portable generators which homeowners use for backup power in emergencies.

LED Light Bulb Terminology

Coloring Rendering Index (CRI) – CRI represents the quality of light and its faithfulness to render colors correctly, that is, to enable us to perceive colors as we know them. The ideal CRI is 100, and some incandescent bulbs approach this level. LEDs and CFLs use different design components in trying to equal the CRI of incandescent bulbs. LED bulbs CRI ratings range from 70 to 95, and the best CFLs have ratings in the mid 80s. The entire line of Viribright A19 bulbs, for example, features a CRI of 90+ Warm White making them one of the highest in the industry.

Correlated Color Temperature (CCT) – is the measure used to describe the relative color appearance of a white light source. CCT indicates whether a light source appears more yellow/gold/orange or more blue, in terms of the range of available shades of “white.” CCT is given in kelvins (unit of absolute temperature). 2700K is “Warm”,  4000K is “Cool” and 6000K is “Daylight”. The typical light color we are used to in indoor home lighting is “warm”, 2700K.

Lumen – a unit of standard measurement that is used to describe the amount of light contained in an area as perceived by the human eye. The more lumens, the brighter the light. You can use lumens to compare the brightness of any bulb, regardless of the technology behind it, and regardless of whether it’s incandescent, CFL or LED.

In practical application, when buying a light bulb, we should look for bulbs which produce more light but consumes less energy. Understanding lumens as a measure of brightness makes it easier to select the most efficient bulb for your application. This is also important

What You Should Know About Choosing Light Bulbs

Here is how the most common types of bulbs compare:

Brightness and Efficiency

Because bulbs vary in their efficiency, it’s best to compare bulbs based on their light output (lumens) rather than their wattage (amount of energy used). The higher number of lumens, the brighter the light will be. Higher wattage bulbs use more energy. Here’s how bulbs compare.

Color Choices

Traditional incandescent bulbs emit a “warm” color. Today, bulbs are available in a range of colors:

Soft/Warm White
The standard color
of incandescent bulbs
Cool White
Good for kitchens
and work spaces
Daylight
Good for reading
and work spaces
2700K 4000K 6000K / 6500K

Shape Choices

bulb-alineA-Line (A19 or omnidirectional) bulbs disperse light at a wide angle and are ideal for fixtures used to spread light throughout the room. A-line bulbs are a good choice for room area-lighting, reading lamps, and hallways.

Spotlights (BR30, BR40) concentrate light in a small area to produce a bright spot of light. Spotlights are a good option for track lighting and overhead recessed lighting.

bulb-floodlightFloodlights (PAR30, PAR38) cast a wider directional light than spotlights. Floodlights are ideal for recessed lighting, outdoor lighting, landscape lighting, and motion sensors.

bulb-candleCandelabra and Miniature Candelabra bulbs (E12) imitate the shape of a candle and provide ambient and accent lighting. They are for use in decorative lighting fixtures, including wall sconces, decorative fixtures and chandeliers.

Bulb Base Choices

bulb-mediumMedium (E26) – The bulb base design for standard light bulbs, used in most lamps and overhead light fixtures.

Candelabra (E12) – A slightly smaller bulb base, used in chandeliers, light sconces and other small fixtures.
